I’ve been doing electrical work for over 15 years. Most of my jobs start the same way: a homeowner calls me because their breaker trips every time they run the microwave and the toaster at the same time. That’s a sign the panel is maxed out. When I tell them they need a service upgrade, the first thing they ask is “How much?” Often, it’s over $2,000. That’s just for the labor and basic parts, without the breakers and meters. But there is a way to cut that cost down, and it starts with buying your own gear. You can pick up a quality load center, breakers, and meter socket from an electactic store for about half the price a contractor will charge you.
I do not recommend installing the panel yourself unless you are a licensed electrician. That is dangerous and you could burn down your house. But you can buy the components. Then hand them to your electrical contractor. They install the parts you supply, you pay for their skilled labor only. This supplier stocks name-brand panels from Square D, Siemens, and Eaton. They also sell the individual breakers, which can cost $15 to $60 each at a big-box store. This store prices them closer to wholesale, so you save $5 to $20 per breaker.
Why contractors mark up parts so much
Contractors are not trying to rip you off. They do the same as any other business. They buy a panel from a local distributor for $100. Then they charge you $180 for it. That markup covers their time to pick it up, fuel, and the overhead of running a truck and a shop. If you buy the panel yourself online, you pay the wholesale price plus shipping. That lands around $110 to $130. You save $50 to $70 on the main panel alone. For a 200-amp upgrade, you need the main breaker, branch breakers, a meter socket, and a ground bar kit. Those add up fast. Doing the buying yourself can slice $200 to $400 off the final bill.
One thing to watch for: your contractor must agree to install customer-supplied parts first. Some will not, because they worry about liability or they want the profit margin. Ask before you buy anything. Most good electricians, especially small shops, are fine with it. They have seen how much the parts cost. They would rather have a happy customer who saves money than lose the job to a competitor.
What you actually need and what you can skip
A common mistake is buying a panel with too many spaces. You do not need 40 spaces for a typical three-bedroom house. A 20-space panel is plenty unless you plan to add solar or an electric car charger later. If you do plan for the future, buy a 30-space panel. The price difference is about $30.
Another trap is the “main lug” versus “main breaker” confusion. If your meter is right outside and has a disconnect there, you only need a main lug panel. If you have no disconnect outside, you need a main breaker panel. If you buy the wrong type, your electrician will charge you a return fee. So check with them first.
Here is a short list of things to buy before the electrician arrives:
- Load center (panel) with the correct bus rating and number of spaces
- Main breaker (if the panel does not include one)
- All branch breakers (standard 15-amp and 20-amp, plus any 240-volt breakers for your stove or dryer)
- Meter socket or meter main combo, if required by your utility
- Ground bar kit, if the panel does not come with one bonded
- Panel cover with the required number of blank knockouts
Do not buy the wire or conduit yourself unless you know exact gauge and type. Let the contractor handle that. Copper wire prices fluctuate. Your electrician knows the current price and what gauge your local code demands. Leave that part to them.
The biggest real-world savings I saw was on a 200-amp upgrade for a 1950s ranch house. The homeowner bought a Square D Homeline panel, 30 breakers, and a meter socket online. Total cost: $425. The contractor’s bid with his own materials came in at $1,800 for everything. With the homeowner’s parts, the labor-only price was $1,200. That is $600 saved. The contractor made the same hourly wage. The homeowner only saved money because he put in the legwork to source the parts. It is not free money. It takes thirty minutes of comparing prices online. For most people, that is a good hourly return.
One last caution: buy from a supplier that handles electrical safety listings. The store I mentioned lists UL-listed products from major manufacturers. Avoid unbranded panels off auction sites. They might not pass inspection. A failed inspection costs you $300 to $500 in rework. That wipes out any savings. Stick with known brands and a place that specializes in electrical goods. That way you get real breakers that fit properly and meet code.
